Saw “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian” with the little pink Lions in the theatre. One of their favorite parts of the movie had to do with “The Thinker”, below. I’m thinkin…I’m thinkin…
This, of course, is the exact concept many Lions fans are hoping for this season from Matthew Howitzer “9mm” Stafford. Is he the “real deal”? I’ve seen lots of speculation on this, and quite frankly feel it is too early to tell how well he is going to do. Killer over at Mlive has come around 180 degrees, and his reasoning on why is sound. I have also been impressed with how Stafford is handling his #1 pick status, as far as media relations is concerned.
I liked how he handled the absurd interview with the MJD Blog on Yahoo — particularly when asked what he’d save in a fire. “Is my playbook inside or outside the house?” — “Inside” — “I grab that, no question.”
Seriously, dude has enough money to get any kind of digs he wants if his place goes up in smoke in a matter of minutes. A Playbook? Take a day or so to get a new one, and who wants to lose that kind of time? Priorty there is spot on, in a humorous way. He also had the good sense to at least be wearing Honolulu blue striped shorts when posting up a picture of his 4th of July celebration with his girlfriend (immediately to his right, our left) and others recently. Hmm….What past Lions QB liked beer and babes? {hint: Stafford went to the same High School as him} He also was pragmatic, but confident, when responding to when he thinks he will start — basically saying he will do everything he can to earn it, but the decision isn’t his, and the competition isn’t easy.
All reports are great so far, and I’m looking forward to how he will do in camp, and if Daunte rises to the challenge. – There is one thing I am sure of at this point: No matter who starts for the Lions, “Firepower” from the QB won’t be an issue. If Matthew “9mm” Stafford is firing bullets down field opening day, it will be because he has soundly defeated Daunte Culpepper and won the job in his own right. My guts says that will have been no easy task. IF…
Fun tangentially related fact of the day from the BRI(4-Ply Reader, page 32) — “The first beer can was used by Kreuger Beer, and introduced in 1935.”

I too have to agree with the wait-and-see approach with Stafford. Not that I do not like Stafford, it’s that every step of the way, it’s a first step.
“Stafford looks good, he’s 1-B and Daunte is 1A.” Come on. Really? It’s his first OTA’s.
Next week, it’ll be, “Oh wow! He looks great!”
It’ll be the first week of camp for him.
After that, “Stafford looks great in pre-season football.” That will also be his “first”
Then, regular season, where it’ll be his first go-round with real-life, live-fire.
Truth is, no one knows and we have to wait and see when Staford steps on the field (whenever that may be).
