The Schwartz is With Us
September 30th, 2009 | by detfan1979 |You should all check out this video of a “mic’d up” Schwartz from NFL.com— it just really emphasizes something that is becoming readily apparent as both the team and individual players continue to improve: We have a real coaching staff here in Detroit.
Favorite phrases from the tape:
- ”Balls on the one, stuff this ball up their {donkey}”. (before morris TD)
- ”hard count their {donkey}” (backed up on the one)
- ”call it here – TD.” (right before the 1st TD)
- ”Sling that {insulting name for female dog}” (to Stafford)
I like how he is giving motivation, general direction, and suggestions to offense and defense in the game. He is obviously totally into the game, totally into what is happening on the field; big picture and individual players. Love seeing him be an active game-manager on the sideline. The results are showing that what they are doing in practice and during the week is also positive.
I also had a chance to re-watch the game tonight, and took some notes on things I missed the first time. Tomorrow, I will be posting them up in the same style I did for the preseason games. I hope to make this a regular weekly feature. Also, I will be back to the Lions Congregation this week. Finally, if you’ve got questions you want me to ask the Chicago correspondent for my Saturday game preview, please email them to me.

For the Chicago associate:
Can we introduce him to “Claw the Wall” and Pound the Rock”? It does put the story of Rod wrestling the Bear, to now being a Bear in perspective.
But seriously:
1. Does he think Chicago can run the ball?
2. Does he think Cutler can pass in the swirling winds at Soldier Field, something he didn’t do well with in Denver?
3. How are the Bears’ receivers filling out? Obviously Knox is a surprise, but the rest?

I absolutely loved the Schwartz video; it’s great. He actually called that TD pass in advance: that’s crazy. I really liked when he went up to Jason Hunter and told him “Hey, they can NOT block you.” You could tell Hunter was jacked up after that; it was great.
He just really seems to “get it” and knows how and when to push the right buttons to make the team better.

Yeah, Schwartz is a young coach who makes a few mistakes, but he really is in tune and has the pulse of this team.
I was able to see that clip last night, and I love the energy. I’m enthused about Backus and some of his comments today.

Perhaps the biggest positive testimony on coach Schwartz today is the Lions are 1-2 while the Titans are 0-3?
Let there be no doubt Stafford is learning and improving every game. After stopping the Skins initial drive at the Lions 1, was really impressed with the hardcount that drew the Skins offsides and gave the Lions some breathing room.
I like what I’m seeing from Stafford in the area of play action. Looking one way, then throwing the other, fake handoff – drop back and pass. When you watch/rewatch the game notice all the nuances in Stafford’s “acting” during plays. And notice the only voice Stafford is hearing during the game is Linehan’s, as Linehan is always there on the bench going over whatever.
