Lions Congregation: Steelers at Lions
October 9th, 2009 | by detfan1979 |Time once again for the Lions Congregation – where the best of the Lions Bloggers on the web get together and provide there take on burning questions of the day.
1. Special Teams obviously cost us the game last week. Is Derrick Williams the answer? And how would you contain explosive former CFLer Stefan Logan?
The Derrick Williams that excelled at Penn state could be the answer. The Derrick Williams in practice could be the answer. The Derrick Williams that showed up in preseason games is not. Lets hope the right one shows up, and solidifies what looks to be the weakest pick of this draft thus far. One way is what the Lions did this week: Activate Zack Follett, make no pretense he’s going to be playing LB anytime soon and give him one job to do – stop the returner cold in his tracks. It’s all on Follett this week to make his mark as a special teams specialist and earn his roster spot. I have a feeling he responds, and responds well.
2. With the emergence of Rashard Mendenhall and the maturation of Ben Roethlisberger, how do you defend the Steelers?
The Steelers are still a bit weak on the line, and Ben holds the ball way too long. You have to keep hitting him and getting pressure. He doesn’t like to take the short dump-off routes, so take away the long ball long enough to get to him, and focus on stopping the run. Ben is not a dink-n-dunker he is more of a take a long shot, or hand it off. If you make him hit the short middle on quick passes, you can force him into sacks or turnovers. Run blitzing successfully will be key.
3. What’s your prediction for Steelers – Lions?
No score prediction, but unless the Lions play perfect and the Steelers have a bad game, I’m going to go with another Lions loss – but also another strong effort with more progress and improvement seen.

Hey Detfan, congrats on what you’ve done with your blog. I’ve been reading your stuff since you started this, and have been really impressed with how it’s evolved.
What do you think of the possibility of a Sims trade? With Dizon and Levy playing well, it seems like the LB core is the strongest area of the team, and the only spot that the Lions can afford to give up a player that has significant value. I’ve really been frustrated watching Ernie take bad angles when rushing the line of scrimmage, and then the rbs just run right through the lane that he should have been covering. I’m worried that Sims is going to end up losing his spot to Levy anyways, and then his value will drop. Do you think that there is any chance the Lions will trade him? If so, what do you think they could get in return?
